So the success of Alvin and the Chimpmunks has obviously spawned a live-action film adaptation of another 80s cartoon, The Smurfs. This should be interesting.

Particularly when you have a cast like Neil Patrick Harris, Jonathan Winters as Papa Smurf, George Lopez as Grouchy Smurf, Katy Perry, and Quentin Tarantino as Brainy Smurf.

It is directed by Raja Gosnell, who is no stranger to adapting cartoons into live-action movies, having done both Scooby-Doo movies. Has a release date of July 29, 2011.

OMG, the cast alone is worth hearing. Very Happy This I have to see. (At least maybe that will entice them to release the rest of the series on DVD. I don't think they got through season 1, yet)

Hank Azaria will be playing Gargamel.

There was some previous confusion when initial reports were that Azaria would be voicing him, but Neil Patrick Harris cleared things up on his Twitter and stated that the role would be live-action.

I need to go to Wayback retrieve my Elemental's Mountain fanfic and put it on ff.net before everyone else puts their Smurfs fics on there! Arrow
I believe the Smurfs voice cast are either dead or retired. I know for sure Don Messick (Papa), Hamilton Camp(Greedy), Paul Winchell (Baby), Michael Bell (Johann/Jokey) are dead, among others. I think it's interesting that they got people who are almost, the how should I put this, the human embodiment of the particular Smurf. like Paul Ruebens as Jokey, and Wolfgang Puck as Greedy Smurf, Jeff Foxworthy as Handy (though I would have more of thought of him as Clumsy because Clumsy had that distinct "hillbilly" accent and maybe the younger guy who hosts This Old House or somebody as Handy Smurf. Very Happy) Wink
