If you've ever been to the Mulan forums, you may have run across a maniacal Shan Yu fan who calls herself Tian Ning.  She is the only person I know who lusts after Shan Yu even more than I do.

Tian Ning set out to write a fanfic, an exploration of Shan Yu's past, to explain the motives behind his ruthlessness in Mulan and correct the misconception that Shan Yu is a mere villain.  She picked up on various small, mysterious points in the film and is weaving them into a (fascinating) story.  And she brought characterization to the five elite Huns, who play a pivotal role in Mulan and yet weren't even given names until Tian Ning came along.

Somewhere along the way, this tale vaulted from the fanfic arena and became whopping good historical fiction.  It's still being written, but what she has already posted will keep you coming back for more.  So if you're the least bit interested in Shan Yu or Huns.... or if you like an excellent story, beautifully written... or if you simply need a little excitement in your life (Shan can always provide that!)....
